Testimonials

Jo has been a fantastic sewing instructor to my 13 year old daughter! She is able to translate her extensive experience in a way that is not too overwhelming for a beginner (or a beginner’s mom). She makes suggestions on material, but allows my daughter to select projects that really interest her. She is an excellent listener and makes an effort to work in different named sewing techniques into each project. She encourages and supports my daughter’s goal to design her own clothing one day. Every kid needs a teacher like Jo who tells them they can do it in a way that makes them believe it!

-Jean, North Andover

I can attest to Jo's phenomenally supportive and knowledgeable teaching of sewing.  I arrived as an older adult, not having sewn since I was super young, with barely any skills whatsoever, but lots of ideas and queries.  I could not have hoped for a better teacher....I have signed up three times for more lessons.  I feel Jo is as enthused as I am to see ideas come to fruition, and is ever-curious, open to alternative  approaches to problem solving, all while grounded in her immense experience and capabilities. I feel really lucky to have chanced upon such a patient and kind teacher who has such a storied and long expertise in so many aspects of her trade.More importantly, she is just a very good teacher, in that she can explain and show techniques and skills in absorbable and practical ways.  A rare thing, indeed.

Private Sewing Lessons (4 classes)

The cost for private sewing lessons is $140 for four lessons. Openings are subject to availability.

To schedule your private lessons or if you have any questions, contact Jo at sewjohanna1955@yahoo.com.

Private sewing classes are open to all age and skill levels and are geared towards anyone interested in sewing that desires extra one-on one-attention. If you have never sewn before we can start with hand stitches, threading a sewing machine, selecting patterns, fabrics and notions. If you used to sew but are rusty, we can review the basics and make a suitable project for your skill level. Maybe you have an unfinished project that you are stuck on, or a pile of beautiful fabrics that you’d like to use, Jo can help you with that. If you only need a quick lesson on a specific skill (like inserting zippers) we encourage you to sign up for our 1-class Sewing Refresher option (see below for details).

Sewing Refresher (1class)

The cost for this 1-hour class is $40 and we will focus on the skills you are most interested in brushing up on. Please contact Jo at sewjohanna1955@yahoo.com with questions or to schedule a time.

Sewing Lessons (Intermediate)

This class is for students with prior sewing experience. The cost of this class is $120.00 for 4 lessons with a maximum of 4 students per lesson. Each lesson runs between 60-90 minutes.

Classes will be held once per week for four weeks. Students need to attend each class so they don’t fall behind. In the case of an emergency contact the instructor to schedule a time to cover what was missed before the next class period. Due to high demand, we are unable to accommodate more than one make-up session.

Prerequisites

To enroll in this class, students must have already taken our Introduction to Sewing class or be able to demonstrate proficiency in basic hand stitches, threading and operating a sewing machine, have a knowledge of seam finishes and be comfortable picking out patterns, fabrics and notions prior to the first class. If you are unsure if you qualify for this class, email sewjohanna1955@yahoo.com to schedule a free discussion or stop by the shop during business hours.

What You Will Learn

Students enrolled in intermediate sewing lessons will build on the skills learned in the Introduction to Sewing class. Each session covers a different skill (e.g. zippers, darts, facings, gathering, circles, buttonholes, interfacing, waistbands, hems, sleeves, topstitching and much more).

Students are expected to be comfortable selecting materials, setting up and using their sewing machine, following directions and working independently in a group setting. If you are not comfortable threading and operating a machine, using an iron and basic hand stitches we recommend that you take the Beginning Sewing course which can be taken multiple times.
